A LITTLE FAMILY HISTORY...
We moved to the Outer Banks in 1997 when our son, Jonathan was 13. He started working at Tommy's Gourmet Market and Wine Emporium when he turned 15 and has worked every summer and holiday up until he was commissioned as an Officer in the United State Air Force. Since he was a little boy he has loved airplanes and knew he was going to be a pilot, so when he was awarded a scholarship from the Air Force ROTC to attend the University of Colorado in Boulder he was thrilled. He finished flight school at Columbus Air Force Base in Mississippi as a "Distinguished Graduate". He is now stationed at Seymour Johnson AFB in North Carolina where he will be flying the F-15E Strike Eagle. He was one of the select few in the country to be awarded a fighter. He is living his dream and loving it!
Kaitlyn started her training in the grocery/gourmet business when she was only 10 years old. Although she likes the specialty food business she is attending Wake Forest University where she plans to major in Anthropology and minor in Health Policy & Administration and Spanish. While at school she rowed for the crew team, joined the cycling club and road in the ACC Championships (which Tommy’s Market sponsored) and is the Assistant Vice President of Finance for Alpha Delta Pi. Even with her academic and athletic achievements she still finds time to be actively involved in several community service organizations both at school and on the Outer Banks. Did we mention she volunteered every week at the Outer Banks Hospital while working at Tommy's. In 2010 she is studying abroad in South Africa for a semester where she has brought so much joy to people with Aids and TB. This summer she will be taking classes in Madrid, Spain. Ok so we're just a little proud of our children.
As a family we have always enjoyed traveling so we 10 of us will be spending a week with Kaitlyn in Spain. When traveling some of us like experiencing what some might call semi-extreme sports. We enjoy trying everything even if it's only once; hang gliding, parasailing, surfing, kite-boarding, hot air ballooning, ice climbing, back packing in Alaska, and sky-diving just to name a few. Our favorites include some of the water sports on the Outer Banks, but flying, snowboarding and cycling are on the top of our list. Stuart even completed the "Cycle Across North Carolina" riding 482 miles on his "Seven" titanium and carbon bike without even a flat tire. He’s now learning to row after cheering on the Wake Forest Crew Team last year.
Along our travels we all enjoy shopping at the local grocery and gourmet markets and experiencing the regional cuisine. With the whole family appreciating gourmet food it's fun to search for the best food to bring back to the Outer Banks for both the vacationer and the locals to enjoy. |
